BIOGRAPHY

Gwenyth Fugard was born in New Zealand and arrived in London in the early 1980’s, pursuing a career in fashion and textile design. With knowledge and skills of cutting, stitching and assemblage, Fugard approaches her oil paintings with the notion of construction and building out the surface of the canvas. Oscillating between excess and restraint, privacy and disclosure, the works hold an internal logic. Her palette is strong but minimal as she explores themes of light through her non-representational compositions.

She graduated from Central St Martins with a BAFA and City & Guilds with an MAFA (hons).

Fugard has had three solo shows at Lisa Norris Gallery and exhibited regularly in group shows, including Roaming Room Gallery, Enfant Terrible, Unit 1 Gallery, as well as attending Radical Residency II. She won The Signature Art Prize for painting in 2014 and the Tony Carter Award in 2017. Fugard’s paintings are held in private collections internationally.
